Borneo is made by one person, so replies usually take a day or two. When reporting a bug, it helps a lot to include your iPhone model, your iOS version, and the destination you were searching for.

Common questions

Does it work without internet?

Yes, after the first fetch. Searching for a destination and finding places needs a connection, but once a trip is saved, its plan, packing list, place photos and descriptions are stored on your device and open with no network at all.

Why does it ask for my location?

For two things, both only while you're using the app. When you start a new trip and tap the button to prefill the city you're in, it asks for coarse location (accurate to about a kilometre). During a trip, the Today screen uses your location (to about a hundred metres) to show how far the next stop is; that never leaves your iPhone. The app never tracks you in the background, and works normally if you decline.

Where do the places and photos come from?

Place data comes from OpenStreetMap, searched through the Nominatim and Overpass services. Descriptions and photos come from Wikipedia and Wikidata. All of it is contributed by volunteers.

A place I know is missing, or its details are wrong

Borneo shows what OpenStreetMap and Wikipedia know. If something is missing or outdated, the fix is to edit it at the source — anyone can edit OpenStreetMap, and corrections show up in the app within a few days.

Some places have no photo, just a symbol

That's expected. A neighbourhood park or a small café usually has no Wikipedia article, so there's no photo to show. Those rows fall back to their category symbol.

How do I delete my data?

Delete the app. Everything Borneo stores — your trips, packing lists, plans and cached place data — lives on your device and goes with it. A trip you've shared with friends is also kept in iCloud. If you shared it, stop sharing it first and it disappears for everyone; if a friend shared it with you, leaving it removes only your copy. There's no account and no copy on any server of mine to request the deletion of.

Can I get my trips onto another device?

Not yet — trips are stored on the device you made them on. What you can do is share a trip with friends: they get it on their iPhone through iCloud, and everyone's changes, votes and expenses stay in step. You can also send a plan as a picture or a PDF.
